Simulation Training!

Why
Simulator Training?
The simulator provides an
interactive system to teach both psychomotor skills and crisis
resource management for anesthesia students. Certain
patient situations are uncommon and therefore a trainee seldom
gains experience in managing rare but clinically significant
problems. Also, simulators dynamically illustrate difficult
concepts such as intrapulmonary shunting, uptake and
distribution of inhaled anesthetics, and invasive hemodynamic
monitoring techniques. With simulators, you will build your
skills and practice unusual events to achieve the best outcome
in crisis management.
Difficult Airway Module:
The realistic upper airway an atomy
of our
METI Emergency Care Simulator
is modeled on CT scan data of an actual patient. Direct
laryngoscopy, oral, and nasal tracheal intubation can be
performed under a variety of standard and difficult airway
scenarios. Features include:
-
difficult
airway conditions of pharyngeal obstruction, swollen tongue,
laryngospasm, left and right bronchial obstruction for scenarios:
- 'Cannot Intubate, Can Ventilate'
- 'Cannot Intubate, Cannot
Ventilate'
-
physiological response to drugs including induction agents,
sedatives, paralytics, analgesics, and anesthetic gases
-
spontaneous
breathing with realistic chest movement and exhaled CO2 flow
to confirm placement of airway devices
-
bag/Valve/Mask ventilation, endotracheal tube intubation, LMA
placement
-
tracheal
access through the neck for transtracheal jet ventilation,
needle or surgical cricothyrotomy
More
information on features of the simulator are
available in this pdf file:
Pgs 1-3 describe airway features; pgs 4-7
describe the pulmonary system features; pg 8 describes
cardiovascular system features; pgs 9-11 describe pharmacology
features; pgs 12-14 describe fluids features; pg 15 shows the
waveform display monitor with the parameters that will be
available continuously during the simulation.

Clinical Skills
Workshops
Each year, the program conducts workshops to build clinical
skills in key areas of anesthesia. Small groups of 4-6
students work with a clinical instructor on airway management
procedures, insertion of central venous catheters, and
regional anesthesia methods.
