Requirements
The University
of South Carolina School of Medicine and Palmetto Health are committed to providing equal consideration
to all applicants regardless of race, color, ethnic and national
origin, religion, sex, age or marital status. Admission is
on a competitive basis. Students are chosen on the basis of
their academic record, employment history and performance,
character, and general fitness for the study of nurse anesthesia.
To be accepted, the applicant must submit evidence of good
physical health, emotional stability and personality considered
necessary for successful performance as a nurse anesthetist.
Students
admitted to the Masters of Nurse Anesthesia Degree Program
are selected by an admissions committee composed of faculty
from the USC School of Medicine, clinical coordinators, and
nurse anesthesia students. There were 100 applicants
and 28 admissions for the class of 2006, 117 applicants
and 28 admissions for the class of 2007, and 100 applicants
and 28 admissions for the class of 2008.
Prerequisites
for admission include:
1. A preferred
GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate course work in completion of a
BSN and/or BS degree in a related science field (official
transcripts from each school or college previously attended
with degrees posted). The average GPA for admitted students
was 3.5 for the class of 2006, 3.45 for the class of 2007, and
3.5 for the class of 2008.

2. Current
licensure as a registered nurse in one of the 50 states. SC
licensure is required for matriculation.
3. Satisfactory
score on the Graduate Record Exam General Test taken within five years
of applying. The average GRE score for admitted
students was 476 verbal and 545 quantitative for the class of
2006, 468 verbal and 563 quantitative for the class of
2007, and
496 verbal and 587 quantitative for the class
of 2008. To have GRE report your official score to
the university, specify institution code 5818; no department
code is required so enter 0000 if requested. If you have
already taken the test, contact GRE to request your score
report: either go to www.gre.org
and from the column at left select under General Test, the
link for 'scores & scores reporting' to download a
printed request form for fax or mail, or phone 1-888-473-7267
for an automated score report process (you will need a credit
card, social security, and institution code 5818). If
your test date or application is near the June 15 application
deadline, please fax a copy of your score to the School of
Medicine Graduate Office 803-733-3168 for consideration in
offering interview (however, you must still request an official
score report to the university prior to program
admission).
4. A minimum
of one year full-time critical care nursing experience prior
to the application deadline of June 15. Direct patient contact is required.
Clinical experience shall be evaluated upon request.
5. Satisfactory
completion of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
6. Letters
of recommendations from two health- care professionals who
have supervised clinical experience.

Application
Procedure
Applicants
must apply to the Graduate School of the University of South
Carolina before they can be interviewed for the USC/PHR Graduate
Program in Nurse Anesthesia.
Electronic
application via the following internet link is preferred but
applicants without computer access may contact us by mail or
email to request a paper application. Specify spring
semester of the next calendar year as "Term applying
for" and for "Select Degree Program" specify Medicine Graduate - Masters of Nurse Anesthesia.
For example, applicants submitting applications by June 15,
2006 should specify spring semester 2007 as the term applying

Application
deadline is June 15. Selected candidates for admission will
be scheduled for a personal interview with the
admissions committee to be held in July of the year prior to
the January admission (48 applicants were interviewed for the
class of 2007). Letters of appointment will be sent to
applicants in August or September. Applicants are
required to send a reply with their intentions concerning
matriculation within two weeks of the letter of appointment. A
$250 non-refundable deposit must accompany the letter of
acceptance. This deposit will be applied to the first-year
clinical fees when the student matriculates.
Certain applicants, not offered
admission, will be informed that they are on an alternate list
and may be offered an appointment if one of the recipients of
an appointment cancels enrollment into the program prior to
matriculation. If your application is declined, you may
request USC Graduate School that your application be
reconsidered for admission to that program or considered for
admission to another graduate program without resubmitting
your credentials (a $15 fee is required with a completed form;
click here for the form
Request for Change of Status). Applicants who
are reconsidered for admission to the Anesthesia program
compete with current applicants. They must submit a revised
current resume or curriculum vitae and two (2) current
professional letters of reference prior to interview.
